This Month: Friendship
Friends are the flowers in the garden of life.” Paula Cullison will facilitate our discussion through several genres: books, movies, plays, TV, storybook and cartoon characters. As an undergraduate psychology major, she was influenced by Eric Fromm, a social psychologist who delved into the meaning of love (parental, familial, friendship, romantic). He is the author of The Art of Loving. As children we learn about friendship from: Our Gang, Winnie the Pooh, Peanuts, Heidi. Now we enjoy books such as: On Cold Mountain, Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, Astrid and Veronika, The Elegance of the Hedgehog, Where the Crawdads Sing, The Island of Sea Women, The Secret Life of Bees and Fried Green Tomatoes. TV: Seinfeld, Friends, Will and Grace, I Love Lucy. Consider literary characters unable to form friendships as in Gone with the Wind and The Goldfinch.
